Uber/Careem: Available in Luxor and generally cheaper than negotiated taxis. EGP 60-150.

EGP 400-900 per night. No frills, but an authentic institution with a loyal following among Egyptologists and independent travellers.

Susanna Hotel (East Bank) — a budget-to-mid option on the Corniche with a rooftop terrace and Nile views. EGP 500-1,200. Good position for first-time visitors who want to stay on the active side of the river.

Nile Valley Hotel (East Bank) — a functional budget property near the Luxor Temple with basic rooms and a small pool. EGP 400-1,000.

Mid-Range Hotels in Luxor (EGP 2,000-7,000 per night)

Genuinely characterful rather than a standard resort. Requires arranging West Bank transport independently for site visits.

Nile Cruises from Luxor

Many visitors to Luxor never stay in a traditional hotel — they sleep aboard a Nile cruise ship moored along the East Bank Corniche. Most 3-night Luxor-Aswan cruises are all-inclusive and cover guided excursions to Esna, Edfu, and Kom Ombo temples en route.

Budget cruise ships: EGP 8,000-15,000 per person for 3 nights all-inclusive. Mid-range: EGP 15,000-25,000 per person. Luxury (Oberoi Philae, Sanctuary Sun Boat, etc.): EGP 30,000-60,000 per person.

Seasonal Pricing Notes

October to March is peak season: European and American visitor demand is highest, the weather is ideal (20-27C), and the major sites are busy. Book the Sofitel Winter Palace and Al Moudira three to four weeks ahead, or further in advance for December and January.

April and September: Shoulder months with reasonable prices and manageable crowds. Good-value window for independently booked trips.

June to August: Low season due to extreme Upper Egypt heat (40-45C). Prices can drop 40-50% versus peak. Very few international tourists. Some hotels reduce opening hours or staffing levels. Not recommended unless heat tolerance is high.

Neighbourhood Guide

Luxor’s accommodation divides cleanly between the East Bank and the West Bank of the Nile. The choice between them shapes your entire visit - not just where you sleep, but how you spend your mornings at the sites.

East Bank: the Main Accommodation Base: Most hotels in Luxor sit on the East Bank, where the city centre, train station, Luxor Temple, and most restaurants are located. For first-time visitors, or those prioritising convenience and evening dining options, the East Bank is the default choice. Budget accommodation concentrates around the Corniche and near Luxor station. Hostels and guesthouses typically charge EGP 300–700 per night. The Corniche mid-range properties run approximately EGP 1,000–3,000 per night ($20–60 as of 2026) - rooms facing the Nile rather than the street are worth requesting specifically, as the price difference is often small.

West Bank Guesthouses: The West Bank has far fewer accommodation options but makes up for it with proximity to the sites and price. Small family-run guesthouses cluster near the ferry dock and the main West Bank road. Rates are often EGP 200–500 per night - among the cheapest in Egypt. The practical advantage is real: the Valley of the Kings is roughly 6km from the ferry dock. Staying on the West Bank means you can be at the tombs before the tour groups arrive from the East Bank, with no morning ferry queue and no waiting for transfers. If you plan to spend multiple days on the West Bank sites, this side is worth the trade-off of fewer dining options in the evenings.

East vs West Bank - the Practical Summary: Staying on the West Bank saves meaningful travel time for temple visits but has fewer restaurants and evening options. The East Bank (Luxor town) has the main bazaar, most restaurants, and better transport links. Many visitors stay on the East Bank and take the ferry for West Bank day trips - a reasonable compromise for shorter stays.
