Dahab has an established community of long-stay travellers -- freedivers, remote workers, dive instructors, and people who arrived for a week and extended. Apartment rentals also exist for stays of a month or more.

Dahab is a different Egypt from Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada. There are no major chain hotels, no beach clubs with poolside cocktail service, and no late-night DJ sets. What Dahab has is a 2km lagoon strip of open-air restaurants and guesthouses facing the Red Sea, one of the world’s most concentrated technical diving and freediving scenes, and a very low cost of living. Travellers who arrive expecting a resort experience find themselves confused; travellers who come for the water and the slow pace tend to extend their stays.

Dahab is cheap by Egyptian standards and exceptionally cheap by international standards. It has no major luxury resort chains - the accommodation model here is guesthouses, small hotels, and dive camps.

Getting to Dahab

Dahab has no airport. Fly into Sharm el-Sheikh Airport (SSH), then:

There are no five-star international chain hotels in Dahab, and this is not expected to change. The market is deliberately small-scale and independent.

Seasonal Notes and Pricing

October to April: Best conditions for diving and snorkelling (water temperature 22-24C). Most active period. Prices are higher than summer, particularly at the dive resorts. Book Nesima and Blue Beach Club four to six weeks ahead for October through March.

May and September: Shoulder months with lower prices and still-good diving. Good windows.

June to August: Hot (35-40C air temperature) but the sea is warm (26-28C). Prices drop. The tourist volume reduces to a mainly local and long-stay crowd. Still good for diving.

Neighbourhood Guide

Dahab’s accommodation divides across three distinct areas, each with a different character.

The Lagoon Strip (Masbat Area): The main strip of restaurants, cafes, and guesthouses runs along the lagoon. Most budget and mid-range accommodation is here. Rooms with sea or lagoon views are common even at modest prices. Staying on the strip means the open-air restaurants, the water, and the dive centres are all within a short walk. This is the centre of Dahab’s social life and the most practical location for first-time visitors.

Mashraba: The northern continuation of the lagoon strip, quieter than Masbat. Nesima Resort and some of the older established guesthouses are here, and the cafe density thins out. Good for visitors who want to be part of the lagoon area without being in the middle of the evening activity.

The Village (Medina): The residential area behind the lagoon strip. Budget rooms and local food at the lowest prices in town. Less scenic but functional for travellers prioritising cost. Walking distance to the lagoon cafes and dive sites.
