Hotels in Egypt: Where to Stay in Every City

Egypt's accommodation landscape ranges from world-class Nile-view hotels in Luxor and Aswan to all-inclusive Red Sea resorts, Cairo boutique properties in restored historic buildings, and eco-lodges in the Western Desert. The quality ceiling is high; so is the floor if you know where to avoid.

Value for money is generally strong by international standards, particularly in Upper Egypt (Luxor, Aswan) where a mid-range hotel with a Nile view costs a fraction of its equivalent in comparable destinations. Cairo's budget options are clustered around Tahrir Square and Downtown — functional but uninspiring; the Zamalek and Garden City areas offer better surroundings at modest extra cost.

Types of Accommodation in Egypt

Nile-View Hotels

Luxor and Aswan have hotels directly on the Nile banks — some with private moorings for felucca boats. Watching the sun set over the West Bank from a Nile-facing room or terrace is a genuine highlight of Upper Egypt. Quality ranges from budget guesthouses to five-star Winter Palace-style properties.

Red Sea Resorts

Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab, and El Gouna have the most developed resort accommodation. All-inclusive resorts dominate Hurghada and Sharm; Dahab has smaller, independent dive lodges. El Gouna is the most upmarket resort town. Prices vary significantly by season.

Cairo Boutique Hotels

The Islamic Cairo and Zamalek neighbourhoods have boutique options in historic buildings — converted Ottoman merchant houses, 1920s apartments, and restored Art Deco properties. Significantly more characterful than the international chain hotels clustered around Giza.

Desert Camps & Oasis Lodges

Siwa Oasis has eco-lodges built from kershef (salt rock and clay) that blend into the landscape. The White Desert has licensed overnight camping. These are among the most atmospheric accommodation options in Egypt but require advance booking.
