Best Day Trips from Cairo: Pyramids, Alexandria, Fayoum and Saqqara

Cairo sits within reach of some of the most varied destinations in Egypt. The city itself is enormous and can absorb several full days, but the surrounding region extends from the Mediterranean coast to the edge of the Western Desert. Here is how to make the most of the day trips that work - and how to decide which ones fit your time and interests.

Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum

Distance from central Cairo: 20–30 minutes by Uber or taxi.

What it is: The Giza Plateau holds the three pyramids of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, the Great Sphinx, and several smaller satellite pyramids. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) opened its main galleries in 2024 and houses the complete Tutankhamun collection - 5,000 artefacts, including the gold mask - along with a vast reorganised Egyptian antiquities collection.

Entry fees: Giza Plateau (Sphinx enclosure and three pyramids): approximately EGP 160 as of 2026. Entering any individual pyramid interior costs extra - Great Pyramid of Khufu is approximately EGP 400. Grand Egyptian Museum: approximately EGP 450 for the full museum as of 2026; confirm current pricing at the official GEM website before visiting.

Practical: Combine the Plateau in the morning with the Grand Egyptian Museum in the afternoon - they are a 10-minute drive apart along the Ring Road. Budget 2–3 hours at each site. Memphis and Saqqara

Distance from central Cairo: 30–45 minutes by car (approximately 30 km south).

What it is: Memphis was the ancient capital of Lower Egypt and the administrative centre of the Old Kingdom. The open-air museum at Mit Rahina (the modern town built over Memphis) holds the colossal limestone statue of Ramesses II and a scattered collection of sphinxes and statues. Entry approximately EGP 100.

Saqqara, 3 km west, is where the royal court built its necropolis before Giza. The Step Pyramid of Djoser (Egypt’s oldest pyramid, circa 2650 BC) is the centrepiece and has been under restoration - check current access before visiting. The Mastaba of Ti, the tomb of Kagemni, and the newly opened tomb of Mehu offer some of the finest Old Kingdom relief carvings in the country.

Entry: Saqqara site entry approximately EGP 150; individual tomb supplements of EGP 50–100 each.

Why go: The crowds at Giza are incomparably heavier than at Saqqara. A morning at Saqqara followed by an afternoon at the GEM is a more relaxed alternative to the full Giza circuit.

Alexandria

Distance from Cairo: 220 km - approximately 2.5–3 hours by car or 2 hours by express train.

What it is: Egypt’s second city was founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC and served as the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt for three centuries. Today it is a different Egypt from Cairo - Mediterranean-facing, with a corniche along a wide bay, crumbling Art Deco apartment blocks, excellent seafood, and a handful of genuinely world-class sites.

Key sites:

• Bibliotheca Alexandrina - The modern library built on the presumed site of the ancient Library. Entry approximately EGP 50; the planetarium and museum exhibitions are extra.
• Catacombs of Kom el-Shoqafa - The largest known Roman funerary complex in Egypt, mixing Egyptian and Greco-Roman iconography. Entry approximately EGP 100.
• Citadel of Qaitbay - Built in the 15th century on the site of the Pharos lighthouse, jutting into the Mediterranean. Entry approximately EGP 60.
• Montazah Palace Gardens - Coastal gardens with sea views; a good place to wind down before the return journey.

Eating: The seafood at the fish restaurants along the corniche or in the Anfoushi neighbourhood is significantly better than anything equivalent in Cairo. Budget approximately EGP 200–400 per person for a full meal with fresh fish and mezze.

Getting there: The Egyptian National Railway runs fast trains from Cairo Ramesses Station to Alexandria Misr Station - from approximately EGP 100–150 second class or EGP 200–250 first class as of 2026. Book online at the Egyptian Railway website or via an agent. The Spanish Train and Turbini services are the fastest options; avoid the slower intercity services if time is tight.

Day trip vs overnight: A day trip works if you take an early train (7 a.m. departure recommended) and limit yourself to three or four sites. An overnight lets you eat at a proper waterfront restaurant at leisure and see the city at dusk.

Fayoum Oasis

Distance from Cairo: 100 km southwest - approximately 1.5–2 hours by car.

What it is: Fayoum is a fertile depression in the Western Desert, fed by a branch of the Nile (the Bahr Yusuf canal). The oasis contains Egypt’s largest natural lake, ancient sites, desert landscapes, and one of the most unusual geological sites in the country.

Key stops:

• Wadi Al-Hitan (Whale Valley): UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving ancient whale skeletons in the desert - evidence that this region was once covered by the Tethys Sea. Entry approximately EGP 60; the drive from Fayoum city takes roughly 1.5 hours on desert track requiring a 4WD.
• Wadi El-Rayan Waterfalls: Egypt’s only natural waterfalls - a short chain of falls between two lakes. Entry approximately EGP 5 per car. Best visited in spring; water flow reduces in summer.
• Tunis Village: A small craft village known for pottery. Several studios welcome visitors; prices for hand-thrown ceramics are very reasonable.
• Qarun Lake: A saltwater lake with good birdwatching in winter (migrant species include flamingos and kingfishers).

Practical: Fayoum is manageable as a self-drive day trip. The desert roads between sites require a reliable car; deep Wadi Al-Hitan tracks need a 4WD. Alternatively, private guided day tours from Cairo are available from approximately USD 70–100 per person including transport and a guide.

Planning Your Day Trips

If you have one extra day from Cairo: Saqqara + Memphis in the morning, Grand Egyptian Museum in the afternoon - no early start required and dramatically fewer people than Giza.

If you have two extra days: Day 1: Giza Plateau and GEM. Day 2: Train to Alexandria, corniche lunch, catacombs, return by early evening train.

If you have three extra days: Add a Fayoum loop (best as an overnight if Wadi Al-Hitan is on the list) or take the sleeper train to Luxor and continue from there.
