Cairo sits within reach of some of Egypt’s most significant sites. Several can be done comfortably in a single day; others reward an overnight stay. Below are the most practical options, along with honest assessments of what the journey involves.

Saqqara and Memphis

Saqqara is 30km south of Cairo and the most rewarding short day trip from the city. The site contains the Step Pyramid of Djoser (c.2650 BC), widely considered the world’s oldest large stone monument, as well as the Pyramid of Unas, which holds the oldest known Pyramid Texts — religious inscriptions carved into the burial chamber walls around 2350 BC. Beyond the pyramids, numerous mastaba tombs survive with detailed painted reliefs showing everyday Old Kingdom life: farming, hunting, fishing, and workshops.

The nearby open-air museum at Memphis (Mit Rahina) is typically combined with Saqqara. It holds a colossal fallen statue of Ramesses II and a sphinx carved from alabaster. The drive from central Cairo takes about 45 minutes each way by Uber or taxi. A guided tour handles the logistics most efficiently, but a private driver negotiated for the day (expect EGP 600–900) also works.

Dahshur

Dahshur is 40km south of Cairo and frequently skipped, which is precisely why it’s worth going. Two pyramids stand here: the Bent Pyramid, whose unusual double-angled profile reveals a mid-build structural correction made around 2600 BC, and the Red Pyramid, Egypt’s first true smooth-sided pyramid. Visitor numbers are a fraction of those at Giza, and you can often enter the Red Pyramid’s interior with almost no queue. Combine Dahshur with Saqqara for a full day covering Egypt’s pyramid evolution from start to finish.

Alexandria

Egypt’s second city is 220km northwest of Cairo — roughly 2.5 hours by Go Bus express coach or an equivalent by train. The main draws are the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (the modern library built on the site of the ancient one), the Qaitbay Citadel on the Mediterranean waterfront, and the Kom el-Shoqafa Catacombs, an underground Roman-era burial complex. An early start — buses leave from around 7am — gives you six hours in Alexandria before the return journey. That’s enough for two or three sites; an overnight stay allows a much more complete visit.

Fayoum Oasis

Fayoum is 100km southwest of Cairo, approximately two hours by road. The main draws are natural rather than ancient: Wadi El-Rayan has a set of waterfalls (unusual for Egypt) and desert lakes, while Qarun Lake is one of Egypt’s oldest lakes, dating back thousands of years. The Ptolemaic temple at Medinet Madi adds an archaeological dimension. Fayoum is popular as a weekend escape from Cairo’s density and traffic, and it offers a noticeable change of landscape without a long journey.

Wadi Natrun

Wadi Natrun lies 100km northwest of Cairo on the desert highway to Alexandria. It holds four active Coptic Orthodox monasteries — Deir Anba Bishoi, Deir Abu Maqar, Deir al-Surian, and Deir al-Baramus — all of which date to the 4th century AD and remain working monastic communities. The monks sometimes speak with visitors. Modest dress is required. This is a half-day trip, easily combined with a stop on the way to or from Alexandria.

Practical Notes

Most of these destinations work best with a private driver arranged for the day. Expect to negotiate EGP 700–1,200 depending on the destination and your bargaining. Public transport to Saqqara involves multiple connections and is not straightforward with luggage. For Alexandria, the Go Bus app (book in advance) runs clean, reliable coaches with fixed prices and a clear pickup point. Dahshur and Saqqara are most efficiently combined on the same trip — plan for a full day and an early start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Saqqara worth visiting if you've already seen the Pyramids of Giza?
Yes — Saqqara is a different experience. The Step Pyramid predates the Giza pyramids by a century, the site is far less crowded, and the mastaba tombs contain painted scenes of daily life in the Old Kingdom not found at Giza. Budget 2–3 hours and combine with the Memphis open-air museum nearby.
Can you do Alexandria as a day trip from Cairo?
Technically yes — the 2.5-hour bus each way is manageable and Go Bus is comfortable. In practice, you arrive around 10am and need to leave by 5pm, giving about 6 hours on the ground. It works for a quick overview; an overnight gives a much better experience of the city.
