Luxor Airport Transfer Guide: Getting from LXR to East Bank and West Bank

Luxor Airport (LXR) is the gateway for one of the world’s greatest concentrations of ancient monuments - the Karnak Temple complex, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, and the Valley of the Queens are all within 30–40 minutes of arrival. The airport is small and manageable; the transfer process is simpler than Cairo and less resort-focused than Hurghada. Here’s how to get from the plane to where you’re going.

Airport Overview

Luxor Airport has a single terminal handling both domestic and international arrivals. It’s compact - baggage reclaim, customs, and the arrivals exit are all within a few minutes of each other. ATMs and currency exchange counters operate in the arrivals hall; get cash before exiting if you need pounds for taxis. A SIM card kiosk (Vodafone or Orange) is usually available in arrivals.

Taxis wait immediately outside the arrivals exit. There is no designated bus service connecting LXR to the city.

Luxor’s Two Banks

Luxor sits on both sides of the Nile, and understanding this geography matters for your transfer:

• East Bank - where LXR airport is located. Contains Luxor city centre, the main hotel district, Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple, and most restaurants. The majority of mid-range and luxury hotels are here.
• West Bank - across the Nile, reached by local ferry or tourist boat from the East Bank docks. Contains the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Medinet Habu, the Colossi of Memnon, and the small village community of Gezira and Sheikh Abd el-Gurna. A minority of hotels and guesthouses are situated on this side.

If you’re staying on the West Bank, your airport transfer takes you to the East Bank ferry terminal, and from there you cross by boat - most local ferries take 10–15 minutes. Some West Bank hotels can arrange to meet you at the West Bank ferry dock.

Option 1: Hotel Shuttle or Pick-Up

Many Luxor hotels offer airport pick-up services, particularly mid-range and luxury properties on both banks. Some include transfers in the room rate; others charge a flat fee.

How to arrange it: Email or call your hotel in advance to confirm whether they offer airport transfers and the cost. West Bank guesthouses often arrange this informally - your host will typically coordinate being at the ferry dock at the right time if you give them your flight details.

Cost: Free to EGP 150–300 (USD 3–6 as of 2026) for hotel-arranged East Bank transfers. West Bank pick-ups from the ferry involve a coordinated hand-off that most small guesthouses manage efficiently.

Option 2: Official Taxi

Taxis from the rank outside arrivals are the most available immediate option. Luxor taxi drivers generally speak enough English to negotiate a fare and know all the major hotels and sites.

Taxis in Luxor are considerably cheaper than in Cairo or the Red Sea resorts - the city is compact and distances are short. The airport-to-city fare is low enough that aggressive overcharging is less common, though still possible. Counter with a number roughly 30% below whatever is quoted first.

Option 3: Pre-Booked Private Transfer

The difference between a negotiated taxi and a pre-booked transfer is smaller in Luxor than in Cairo - the city is compact and taxi prices are already low. Pre-booking is most valuable for flight-tracked reliability rather than significant cost savings.

Option 4: Uber and Careem

Both apps operate in Luxor with limited driver supply compared to Cairo. At the airport, you may wait 10–20 minutes for a driver to accept, particularly outside peak hours. Traffic in Luxor is light by Egyptian standards. The East Bank’s main road along the Nile Corniche can slow during evening hours, but significantly less so than Cairo.

Getting to the West Bank

From the East Bank ferry terminal (el-Mina el-Qadim, near Luxor Museum), the local passenger ferry crosses to the West Bank dock continuously during daylight hours. The crossing takes approximately 10–15 minutes. Fare is a few Egyptian pounds per person.

Tourist motorboats also make the crossing for a negotiated price - typically EGP 30–80 per person depending on how firmly you negotiate.

Once on the West Bank, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and local taxis connect to the Valley of the Kings entrance (7km from the ferry dock) and other sites. West Bank taxi drivers know their routes well; a day hire covering the main sites typically costs EGP 300–500 and is worth considering if you’re covering multiple sites in a single day.

Practical Tips for Arrival

• Carry EGP. ATMs in the arrivals hall work reliably. Get enough for your transfer and initial expenses before exiting.
• Know your hotel’s bank. Tell your taxi driver which bank (East or West) you’re headed to before agreeing on a fare - this affects the price.
• For temple visits the next morning: If you’re arriving to begin an immediate itinerary, confirm your hotel provides safe luggage storage - some smaller guesthouses have limited facilities. Most reputable properties do.
• Cruise ship arrivals: Luxor is a common midway stop on Nile cruises. If you’re joining a cruise, the ship’s agent will typically meet you in arrivals - look for the representative with your cruise company name.
• Temperature on arrival: Luxor is one of Egypt’s hottest cities, with summer highs routinely above 40°C. In summer months (June–August), arriving in the evening rather than midday is noticeably more comfortable for both the transfer and your first site visits.

Returning to LXR

Allow at least 2 hours before domestic departure and 2.5–3 hours before international flights. The airport is small and processing is fast, but security queues can vary. Most East Bank hotels can arrange a return taxi at roughly the same rates as the inbound journey.
