Running Through Ancient Egypt

The Luxor Marathon is one of the most visually distinctive road races in the world. The course passes through the East Bank and West Bank of Luxor, running alongside the Nile and through the archaeological zones that include Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, and the road to the Valley of the Kings. You are not running past generic city streets - the backdrop is continuous ancient Egyptian history.

The race takes place in late January, when Luxor sits in the cool season. Morning temperatures at the start time are typically 10-14°C, rising to around 18-22°C by midday. This makes it one of the more comfortable marathon experiences for runners accustomed to temperate climates.

Race Categories

The Luxor Marathon offers three distances:

Full marathon (42.2 km): The main event. The course follows a loop that takes runners across the Nile and back, with the finish line in the Corniche area near central Luxor. Elevation is essentially flat throughout.

Half marathon (21.1 km): The most popular category by entry numbers. Covers the core historic sections of the route without the full distance commitment.

10 km: Suitable for recreational runners and those who want to experience the event without full race preparation. Also a reasonable option for runners visiting Luxor primarily as tourists.

Registration and Logistics

Registration opens approximately three months before race day - typically around late October. The official Luxor Marathon website handles online registration. Entry fees vary by category and nationality; check current pricing as of 2026-2027 on the official site.

Travel timing: Most international runners arrive two days before the race to acclimatise. Luxor in January is popular with European tourists escaping winter, so accommodation needs booking well in advance during race week.

Getting to Luxor: Luxor International Airport has direct charter flights from several European cities in winter, as well as connections via Cairo. The train from Cairo takes around ten hours; the sleeper service is a popular option for runners wanting to avoid an early flight.

Post-race: Luxor’s temple sites are within walking distance of most hotels. Many runners combine the marathon with two or three days of sightseeing, visiting Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, and the Colossi of Memnon. See our Luxor guide for what to see and where to stay during your visit.

The Luxor Marathon has a well-organised finish-line area with medical support, baggage storage, and post-race refreshments. It draws an international field, with a particularly strong contingent from the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Who Should Enter

The race suits any runner who wants a destination marathon with a strong cultural experience alongside the physical challenge. The flat course makes it accessible for first-time marathon runners. The January timing fits well into the Egyptian winter tourist season, so a race trip can double as a genuine holiday.
