What Happens at the Sun Festival

Twice a year - on 22 October and 22 February - the rising sun aligns precisely with the main axis of the Great Temple of Ramesses II at Abu Simbel. For around 20 minutes, the light travels 65 metres through the hypostyle hall and illuminates three of the four seated statues in the inner sanctuary. The fourth statue, depicting Ptah, god of darkness, remains in the dark by design.

The October date is thought to coincide with Ramesses II’s coronation; the February date with his birthday, though Egyptologists continue to debate the exact significance. When the Aswan High Dam was built in the 1960s, the temples were relocated piece by piece to higher ground. The new position shifts the alignment by one day - so the phenomenon now falls on 22 October and 22 February rather than the original 21st.

Why It’s Worth the Trip

Abu Simbel is a long way from everywhere. It sits roughly 280 km south of Aswan, close to the Sudanese border. That distance is exactly why attending the Sun Festival feels like a genuine event rather than a casual detour. The crowd at dawn is a mix of Egyptian families, camera crews, and international travellers who have arranged their entire itineraries around a 20-minute window of light.

The atmosphere before sunrise is quiet and focused. Vendors sell tea along the waterfront. As the sky lightens over Lake Nasser, the anticipation builds in a way that is difficult to replicate at standard visiting hours. We recommend arriving well before 5 AM to secure a good position inside the temple.

Practical Information

Getting there: Most visitors fly from Aswan on Egypt Air’s daily service (around 45 minutes). Alternatively, there is an official convoy that departs Aswan by road at around 3 AM, arriving before sunrise. Check the convoy schedule with your hotel in Aswan closer to the date.

Tickets: Standard temple admission applies - around EGP 600 as of 2026. There is no separate event ticket for the Sun Festival itself; you pay normal entry and join the queue.

Accommodation: Abu Simbel has a small number of hotels close to the temples. Rooms book out 4-6 weeks in advance for the festival dates. If you cannot find accommodation in Abu Simbel, staying in Aswan and flying or joining the road convoy on the morning of 22 October is the standard fallback.

Best position: The interior of the main temple fills quickly. Aim to enter as soon as the site opens. Security staff manage the crowd, and the alignment is visible from the central corridor even if you are not directly in front of the statues.

The February Sun Festival follows the same format - if October does not suit your travel dates, the experience is identical.
