Hurghada’s relationship with its coastline is complicated by decades of intensive resort development. The natural shoreline has been built over along much of the central strip, public beach access is limited, and the beaches that remain are largely private — attached to hotels or operated as paid beach clubs. Understanding this before you arrive prevents disappointment.
Resort Private Beaches
The majority of Hurghada’s beach access is through all-inclusive resort hotels, which maintain their own private beach sections. Guests of these hotels have exclusive use of the beach, sun loungers, and often a dedicated stretch of reef or jetty. The quality of the beach — sand depth, cleanliness, crowding — varies considerably between properties.
Non-guests can access many resort beaches by purchasing a day pass. These typically run EGP 200–500 per person and include use of the beach, pool, and sun loungers. Some include a food and drink credit. For visitors staying in non-beach accommodation who want a beach day, this is the most practical route.
Sahl Hasheesh
The planned resort zone 15km south of central Hurghada has a cleaner, less crowded beach environment than the main strip. The sand quality is better and the development is more controlled. Several hotels here — including international chain properties — have beaches that are among the best accessible from Hurghada. The tradeoff is distance from the Marina and the El Mamsha restaurant strip.
Makadi Bay
Makadi Bay, further south again, is another resort zone with private hotel beaches. Sheraton and Barcelo properties operate here. The bay position gives slightly calmer water than the open coast. Boat trips and water sports are available from the hotel beaches.
Giftun Islands — the Best Sand Option
The Giftun Islands national marine reserve, 7km offshore, provides the cleanest and most attractive beach environment accessible from Hurghada. Day boat trips from the Marina include a beach stop on the island. The sand is white and the water around the island is clear. This is not a public beach you can visit independently — it is accessed only via the organised day trips. See our diving and snorkeling guide for how to book.
Public Beach (Ad-Dahar)
A public beach operates in the older Ad-Dahar district in the north of Hurghada. It is free to use. Facilities are basic and the beach is modest in size. It is a functional option for a short swim but not a destination beach. The water quality here is lower than at the offshore sites.
Red Sea Water Conditions
The Red Sea in this stretch is warm year-round: 22–24°C in winter (December–February), 26–28°C in summer (June–August). Jellyfish appear occasionally in the autumn, typically October–November, but they are not a consistent or severe problem. Visibility is generally good. The sea is calm most of the year — strong winds are infrequent but can occasionally disrupt boat trips.
Beach Club Day Passes
Several standalone beach clubs operate along the resort strip and sell day passes without requiring hotel accommodation. Day pass pricing typically runs EGP 200–400 per person and includes sun lounger access and pool use. Water sports — jet ski, banana boat, parasailing — are available as extras at all of them.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does Hurghada have good beaches?
- The beaches are functional rather than spectacular — much of the shoreline is developed, and the best sand and reef access is through resort beach clubs or day trips to Giftun Islands. If outstanding beach quality is the priority, Sahl Hasheesh or El Gouna are marginally better options.
- Can you access beaches in Hurghada without staying at a resort?
- Yes — several resort beach clubs sell day passes to non-guests, including sun lounger and pool access. Giftun Islands boat trips give access to a cleaner beach environment. The public beach in Ad-Dahar is free but basic.
