Sharm el-Sheikh Airport (SSH) serves one of Egypt’s most popular international resort destinations - a compact Sinai peninsula town where most visitors stay within a handful of distinct areas. The airport sits roughly 10km southeast of the main resort strip, making transfers shorter and simpler than in Cairo or Hurghada. Understanding the layout helps you pick the right option and avoid overpaying.

Airport Overview

SSH has two terminals:

• Terminal 1 - handles most international charter flights and some scheduled services
• Terminal 2 - primarily used for domestic flights and some additional international routes

Both terminals have ATMs, currency exchange counters, and SIM card kiosks. Buy a local SIM in arrivals - Egyptian data is cheap (EGP 100–200 for a Vodafone or Etisalat tourist package as of 2026) and having maps and apps working before you leave the terminal makes a meaningful difference for navigating unfamiliar resort areas.

The taxi rank and hotel shuttle pickup zone are directly outside each terminal’s arrivals exit.

The Main Resort Areas

Sharm el-Sheikh’s geography is more spread out than it appears on a map. The key destination areas from the airport:

• Naama Bay - the original resort hub, with restaurants, diving centres, and hotels along the seafront. Approximately 10–12km from SSH.
• Sharm el-Sheikh Old Market (El Hadaba) - the older commercial area south of Naama Bay, popular with budget travellers and longer-stay visitors. 8–10km from SSH.
• Sharks Bay / Ras Nasrani - resort hotels north of Naama Bay along the coast. 12–16km from SSH.
• Nabq Bay - the newer northern resort area with larger hotels and quieter beaches. 15–20km from SSH.
• Dahab - a separate town 90km north; not a Sharm resort area but commonly reached via Sharm for onward travel.

Option 1: Hotel Shuttle

All major resort hotels in Sharm el-Sheikh offer airport transfers, and a significant number include them in package or all-inclusive rates. This is worth checking before booking any other option.

How it works: The hotel sends a driver to arrivals with a name card. For all-inclusive packages, this is usually included and pre-arranged. For independent hotel bookings, call ahead to ask about their transfer service.

Cost: Free to EGP 200–350 (USD 4–7 as of 2026) for chargeable hotel shuttles. Hotels in Nabq Bay sometimes charge more due to distance.

If your hotel provides this service, it’s the most straightforward arrival experience - no negotiation, no navigation.

Option 2: Official Taxi

White taxis operate from the designated ranks outside both terminals. These are available around the clock and represent the standard no-booking-required transfer option.

Distances in Sharm are shorter than in Cairo or Hurghada, which limits how far a taxi driver can inflate the fare before it becomes obvious. That said, drivers at the airport will still often open with double the reasonable rate - know the approximate cost for your route and counter-offer calmly.

Best for: Solo budget travellers staying in Naama Bay who don’t mind a slower arrival. Not practical for Nabq Bay or Dahab routes, where the shared model breaks down due to fewer passengers per route.

Sharm has no meaningful traffic congestion compared to Egyptian cities - these times are reliable outside of the rare resort event that creates temporary road delays.

Practical Arrival Tips

• Agree on the fare before entering any taxi. Ask “how much to [destination]?” and negotiate from there. Drivers who refuse to discuss price before getting in are worth avoiding.
• Buy a SIM card in the arrivals hall. Even a basic Vodafone tourist package gives you data for Google Maps navigation during your transfer - especially useful for verifying your driver is taking the expected route to your hotel.
• Late-night arrivals are common. SSH receives many charter flights from Europe arriving between 11pm and 3am. The taxi rank and hotel shuttle areas operate at these hours, but volumes are lower. Pre-booked transfers are more reliable than standing in line for a taxi at 1am.
• Avoid touts inside the terminal. Legitimate drivers wait outside at the official pick-up areas, not inside the arrivals hall.

Onward to Dahab

If Dahab is your final destination, Sharm el-Sheikh Airport is the closest commercial hub. Dahab is 90km north on the Gulf of Aqaba coast - the road runs through some extraordinary Sinai mountain scenery, particularly the stretch after Nuweiba.

Pre-booked private transfer is the most practical option (see rates above). Alternatively, shared service taxis between Sharm and Dahab run from the Sharm city centre bus terminal - but getting from the airport to that terminal first adds an additional step. Factor this in if you’re considering the shared taxi route.

Returning to the Airport

Allow at least 2.5 hours before international departure for SSH. The airport is compact but security and check-in can queue unpredictably during peak charter season (October–April). Most hotels can arrange a return transfer through the concierge at similar rates to the inbound journey.
