Cairo International Airport recorded 127 flight delays and 5 cancellations on July 13–14 as renewed US–Iran military tensions and a Houthi ballistic missile strike on Saudi Arabia’s Abha Airport sent shockwaves through the regional aviation network. The US Embassy in Cairo issued an advisory on July 14 encouraging American travelers in Egypt to exercise heightened awareness.

What Is Causing the Disruption

Two overlapping crises are at work. US–Iran military tensions that resumed on July 7, 2026 have kept Iranian airspace fully closed and prompted Kuwait to ban all commercial overflights through August 4. On top of this, Houthi forces struck Abha International Airport in Saudi Arabia late on July 13, triggering 208 cancellations and 158 delays across Saudi airports on July 14 - amplifying disruption across the entire Middle East corridor.

Across the region on July 13–14, 201 flights were cancelled and 1,081 delayed in total, affecting the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain. EgyptAir bore the brunt of Cairo’s disruptions, consistent with its existing suspension of routes to Dubai, Doha, Jeddah, Abu Dhabi, Beirut, and Amman due to earlier airspace closures.

Egypt Itself Remains Open

Egypt’s airspace is not affected. Cairo International Airport is fully operational and domestic routes are running normally. The disruptions are concentrated on connecting flights that transit Gulf hubs - any itinerary routed through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, or Jeddah currently carries a meaningful risk of delay, rebooking, or short-notice cancellation.

Check directly with your airline before going to the airport. EgyptAir, Flydubai, Air Arabia, and Saudia are the carriers most exposed on Egypt-to-Gulf routes.
