About the Festival

The Siwa Date and Olive Festival is a three-day harvest celebration held each October in Siwa Oasis, one of Egypt’s most remote and culturally distinct communities. Siwa sits in the Western Desert near the Libyan border, roughly 560 km west of Cairo and 300 km south of the Mediterranean coast at Mersa Matruh.

The oasis is known for producing some of Egypt’s highest-quality dates and olives. The October harvest festival has roots in the Siwi agricultural calendar, when the date palms finish producing and the olive harvest gets underway. The modern festival has grown to include folklore music and dance performances, traditional craft displays, and food stalls selling Siwi specialities.

What to Expect

The festival runs across three days and is centred on the main market area and public spaces of Siwa town. Key elements include:

Date and olive tasting: Local producers sell directly from the harvest. Siwa Oasis produces the Agizi variety of olive, which is pressed into an unusually fruity, low-acidity oil that differs noticeably from standard Egyptian olive oil. Dates from Siwa - particularly the Frehi variety - have a honey-like sweetness. Buying directly from producers at the festival gives you access to fresh stock before it is processed for wider distribution.

Siwi folklore performances: The Siwi Berber population has a distinctive musical tradition with call-and-response singing and percussion instruments not commonly heard elsewhere in Egypt. Performances during the festival are one of the more accessible ways to experience this culture as a visitor.

Traditional crafts: Embroidery, silverwork, and woven palm goods are all represented. Siwa silverwork in particular - earrings, necklaces, and headpieces decorated with coral and cowrie shells - is distinctive and worth buying here rather than in Cairo souvenir markets where imitations circulate.

Getting to Siwa

Siwa has no airport. Most visitors arrive by bus from Cairo (about 9-10 hours via the Alexandria Desert Road, departing from Cairo’s Turgoman Bus Terminal) or by private car. There is also a bus from Alexandria (about 6-7 hours). Confirm current schedules with West Delta Bus Company, which operates the main Cairo-Siwa route.

October is one of the best months to visit Siwa. Desert temperatures drop from the summer extreme to a pleasant 25-30°C during the day, making exploration comfortable. The oasis is at its most productive and green in early October as harvest activity peaks.

Accommodation: Siwa has a small but good selection of eco-lodges and guesthouses, several built in traditional mud-brick construction. Rooms fill quickly during festival weekend. Book directly with properties in Siwa at least 4-6 weeks in advance.
